Kate & Mara’s Swiss Adventure! πŸ›©πŸŒžπŸš‰πŸ”πŸš πŸŽΏπŸ˜Žβ€οΈ

Hello! We interrupt regularly scheduled programming of the Swiss Family Lang-Newkirk blog for this guest post by Kate and Mara Gatto, beloved and beautiful Canadian ladies who took a very exciting trip to Switzerland!

Basel!

It started in beautiful Basel on the Rhine, where the Lang-Newkirks have settled for their extended adventure. It is Spring here! We took a tour of the Rathaus and walked our jet lag off along the river. The following day, the boys showed us the neighborhood and park.

The boys have a week off for Fastnacht, a holiday in Basel when people dress up in grotesque carnival masks and have a huge party to scare away winter. This is a holiday that we Canadians can really get behind! πŸ‘ΊπŸŒ¬β„οΈπŸŒ±πŸŒ·πŸŒž

At Basel I get to sleep with my mom. I like that me and Jakey and Xander can sword fight, it’s really fun. When we went to Switzerland in a plane I was so excited to see everyone and how Switzerland looked like.

MΓΌrren!!!

A few trains and a gondola later, we arrived in MΓΌrren, a sweet village nestled in the incredible, awe-inspiring, spectacular, beautiful Swiss Alps. There are not enough superlatives and exclamation marks. Photos do not do justice to the feeling of being surrounded by these mountains at such scale and altitude.

I love my bunk bed that has curtains to make it darker at our grand chalet. We get to go on the top floor, I really like going there because we get to pick some lunch dessert and we don’t eat cereal for breakfast we actually eat something else that’s really good but not toast with butter like my dad.

We went skiing! It was the best! We also went skating, swimming, sledding … these fun activities were not quite as photogenic as the mountains and my ski onesie.

Mara attended ski school every day in MΓΌrren and was a natural. We are all very proud of her pizza snow plow!

I have a ski school near our chalet. I even like that they tell us what to do and they even give us obstacle courses but at first we just practiced going through a tunnel with some kind of chain on the top. If you want to learn more about it just ask and we can totally do it, it’s no problem.

We were all very proud of Jacob’s skiing this week!
Xander is a teenager now, still smiling. He’s taller and more athletic than his aging millennial aunt, and was very concerned and sweet when I had some altitude sickness after our first ski together.
Many of you know and love Bart, Matt’s BFF who moved to Basel 13 years ago with his wife Whitney and first-born (and then proceeded to have two more boys). We used to call him Suave Bart, and he has always been a social magician. He is friends with everyone in MΓΌrren (and everywhere else he goes), and can talk to anyone about anything on a chairlift for hours. Bart kept in more regular contact with our mother throughout this trip than I did.
I went paragliding?!
… with Buzz, a friend of Bart’s, obviously.
This meal included goat cheese crΓ¨me brΓ»lΓ©e and deer stew among other gamey delights. Cheese in Switzerland did not disappoint πŸ§€πŸ˜

Home again

We spent another lovely evening and morning in Basel dancing and saying goodbye. Thank you so much to our wonderful family. We love you so much, Matt, Leah, Xander, and Jakey, and we miss you already ❀️

Thanks for inviting us, we love you πŸ’•
